What is Positive Behaviour Support?
At Ardross Primary School, we define and foster positive behaviour using Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). This is a student-centred approach to guiding and understanding behaviour, which uses a common language to promote positive behaviours in a meaningful manner. Our intention is to continually develop a school culture that is positive and consistent, based on clear and high expectations for all students.
We explicitly teach our fortnightly positive focus behaviour so that students have a clear understanding of how to demonstrate the behaviour across the school. Ardross Primary School has four PBS values that we explicitly teach and reinforce with our students. Each value is represented by a native plant character, using the local Noongar name, to strengthen cultural understanding and connection to place.
Respect: Nollamara – Kangaroo Paw
Responsibility: Kalyang – Wattle
Resilience: Balka – Grass Tree
Safety: Mangati – Banksia
Behaviour Expectation Matrix
We have developed a PBS Behaviour Expectation Matrix, which provides clear examples of our PBS values and the specific behaviours expected in classrooms and across all outdoor school environments. This matrix supports consistency by helping students and staff share a common understanding of expected behaviours.
Positive Behaviour Celebration
Our students earn PBS recognition from staff and peers when they demonstrate positive behaviours aligned with our values. Each term, students work together to achieve whole-school PBS targets, and when these targets are met, the school earns up to two shared rewards.
Student voice is paramount to this process, with students contributing ideas and selecting rewards once PBS point targets are achieved. Rewards may include extra playtime, icy poles, free-choice activities, craft sessions, or movie time.
Our PBS Matrix highlights how these expectations are demonstrated in different aspects of our school.
